About Anders

Anders Totten, LMT, ATSI, is a practicing bodyworker in the Madison, WI area since 2015

In Wisconsin, our licensure states that we are Massage or Bodywork Therapists. I use the title “Massage Therapist,” primarily for name recognition, as I do not technically massage, nor provide full-body relaxation massage. My more accurate title would be a structural bodyworker, specializing in Structural Integration and Therapeutic Bodywork. Anders Totten is my given name, but many people call me Ders.

When I got crunched

My journey healing began with a wrist injury. In the evening following a defeated game of mercy, I noticed a peculiar, sharp, and electric pain in the top of my wrist. I brushed it off, though when it did not subside, I sought help from my physician. X-Ray Imaging showed nothing and because I had no health insurance at the time, further imaging was simply not viable. The plan was to wait-and-see with Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (R.I.C.E.).

For months, I felt no relief from R.I.C.E., and after eventually becoming insured, further experiences with doctors, specialists, physical therapists and the like, proved no benefit. As an active drummer in a wrist-intensive career as an ice cream scooper, to say the entire ordeal was dismaying would be an understatement.

It took about three years after the initial injury until I decided to take “matters into my own hands,” if you’ll excuse the pun. After Googling “acupressure points for wrist pain,” Google’s algorithms at the time pointed me to a website entitled acupressureschool.com, which happened to be the homepage of a massage therapy and eastern bodywork school a mere 20 minutes away.

At this point, I was so desperate for any inkling as to resolve my predicament, that the inherent risks associated with enrolling in massage therapy school with an injured hand seemed to evade me. I was engrossed by the drive to do anything I possibly could to understand my pain. This, combined with the need for a more promising career path and a dedication in service of others, was the propulsion into my new life.
